How to actually get paid for NJ maternity leave

Job protection is the trellis. Cash is the tomato. This brief is about the tomato.

New Jersey Temporary Disability Insurance and Family Leave Insurance are wage-replacement programs. They are not a bonus from HR and they are not a court order. You apply to the Division of Temporary Disability and Family Leave Insurance, or to an approved private plan if your employer uses one. The official door is myleavebenefits.nj.gov.

Apply online, then watch the mail like a hawk

For the state plan, create an account and apply at myleavebenefits.nj.gov. You can start a TDI claim on or after your first day out of work. You have 30 days after leave starts. Your doctor has to certify the disability. After you finish your part online, you get an Online Form ID to hand your provider. They are not telepathic. Give them the page.

Typical maternity TDI, per NJ DOL: up to 4 weeks before the expected delivery date, then 6 weeks after a vaginal birth or 8 after a C-section, unless certified longer. That is the usual picture, not a promise that your particular recovery fits in a tidy box. If you were on state TDI, wait for the FL2 after delivery to start bonding FLI. Do not “help” by mailing an FL-1 first; the Division says that slows the money.

FLI bonding: up to 12 consecutive weeks or 56 intermittent days in the first year. Notify your employer 30 days before continuous bonding, 15 days before each intermittent stretch. Late employer notice can shrink the benefit. Put the dates on a calendar you actually look at, the same way you would mark a court return date.

The debit card, and the private-plan plot twist

If the state approves you, Money Network / My Banking Direct mails a debit card in a plain envelope that looks like junk. Keep it. Later TDI, FLI, or UI payments often reuse that card. Payments usually land about every two weeks after the first one.

Some employers use an approved private plan instead of the state plan. It must be at least as generous as the state plan. File with the carrier your HR names. If you send a private-plan claim to the state by mistake, forwarding can take weeks. Ask before you click. I am not going to guess your employer’s carrier from Farmingdale.

2026 cash math, official: 20 weeks at ≥ $310, or $15,500 in the base year. Weekly rate is 85% of average weekly wage, max $1,119. See the companion brief on job protection versus pay. Cash and the chair are different statutes. File the cash claim anyway if you qualify; then read the job-protection page so you do not confuse a debit card with a right to return.

Do not mix the clocks in your head

TDI is disability cash while you cannot work because of pregnancy and recovery. FLI is bonding cash after the baby is here, in the first year. FMLA is unpaid federal job protection. NJFLA is unpaid New Jersey bonding protection. The July 17, 2026 expansion is job protection tied to receiving TDI or FLI when those other statutes do not already cover the leave. Four sentences. Four doors. Confirm each on the live official page the week you file.

The 2026 earnings test is the same for the cash programs as the companion brief states: 20 weeks at or above $310, or $15,500 in the base year. Weekly benefit 85% of average weekly wage, 2026 maximum $1,119. I am repeating the numbers on purpose. HR handouts and Facebook aunts round them into folklore.

This is general New Jersey information, not legal advice. File and confirm instructions on myleavebenefits.nj.gov.
